"Eagle Hill Speaks" is a student-facilitated talk show that aims to bring a better understanding of the world through conversations with interesting guests. This year’s series includes Donna Dubinsky, co-founder of Numenta and Palm; Arthur Brooks, author of Gross National Happiness; Wyc Grousbeck, co-owner of the Boston Celtics; and Jim Richardson, chair of the Eagle Hill School board of trustees and one of only two three-time world champions in Farr 40 sailing.
The series began as a one-time project in the spring of 2009. The idea came about during a literature class with teacher Dr. Michael Riendeau, where students had recently finished reading We Dissent, a book of legal dissents written in response to rulings of the Rehnquist Court. Students felt it would be beneficial to take this idea beyond the classroom, and, with the assistance of an involved EHS trustee, invited the author, Michael Avery, to come speak with them.
Two students in the literature class decided to bring Professor Avery to the school not only to converse with the rest of the class but with the entire student body and the public as well. After the first successful interview, students decided to pursue a lecture series as an ongoing element of the programming for the Cultural Center.
This year, Max and Elyssa plan to continue this series with a variety of new guests. Their aim is to get the student body and the general public involved and interested.
The series is free and open to the public. All events are at 2:15 p.m. in the Abby Theatre. The schedule includes:
Friday, March 5: Donna Dubinsky
Thursday, March 11: Arthur Brooks
Thursday, March 18: Wyc Grousbeck
Tuesday, April 6: James Richardson
